As part of the 100-year anniversary of Ernest Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, we were asked by the NZ Antarctic Society to design a book featuring poems about the journey, written by Douglas Stewart and illustrated by Myra Walton.
We focused on the brutal conditions and era of the story behind the expedition, creating a simple saddle-stitched book with a roughly sewn spine, evoking the feeling of a DIY journal.
The book adopted a heavy 2-colour palette, with the poems and black ink illustrations sitting on a heavy cream stock, giving the book a slightly aged feel.
The book has been very well received by the New Zealand Antarctic Society, saying that the design brought to life the unique and dramatic story. This project was a finalist in the Editorial and Books category of the Best Design Awards.
