When the stakes are high, design matters

High-stakes communication is work where the output directly affects safety, health, human rights, or lives. Every design decision carries weight – because on the other end is a person who may be stressed, time-constrained, or making decisions with serious consequences.

Maybe they’re someone seriously injured overseas, needing an air ambulance to get home.

A civil defence responder making critical decisions in the first hours after an earthquake.

A pilot at the end of a long day deciding if it’s safe to land at an unattended aerodrome.

A health professional new to Aotearoa who has never encountered rheumatic fever before.

The stakes are high in each case. What we design reduces their mental load under pressure – and determines how quickly they can act.

New Zealand Air Ambulance Service

When someone encounters the New Zealand Air Ambulance Service, it’s rarely under good circumstances. With over 35 years of life-saving care, their reputation was rock solid, but their brand wasn’t reflecting it. We reshaped their visual identity to project the expertise, credibility and care of their life-saving service.

When a catastrophic event unfolds, every minute matters. The handbook we created for the National Emergency Management Agency is designed to make information easy to find under pressure – so civil defence responders can make decisions and act without hesitation.

Civil Aviation Authority – Work together, stay apart campaign

Mid-air conflicts at unattended aerodromes are a real and persistent risk. The Civil Aviation Authority needed a campaign that not only raised awareness but shifted how pilots behave under pressure, in the air. We designed the Work Together, Stay Apart visual identity, an animation series, and a suite of resources built to reach pilots across every area of aviation. The results were measurable: 85% engaged directly with the campaign and 76% of pilots reported believing unattended aerodromes had become safer.

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora – Acute Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease Guidelines

Rheumatic fever disproportionately affects communities in Aotearoa, yet it’s consistently underdiagnosed – by experienced practitioners and by health professionals that are new to the disease. The guidelines we created for Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora are designed for the reality of clinical work: long shifts, high pressure, no time to read. Clear hierarchy, scannable structure, and visual cues put the right information within reach.

 

Design can save time, reduce errors, build trust, and change behaviour. In high-stakes communication, it can do all of those things at once. The difference between getting it right and getting it wrong is measured in outcomes that matter.
