Consultation Document and Campaign for the 10 Year Plan

Hutt City Council sought an accessible and engaging design and campaign for their consultation document to drive community feedback. The resulting visual language developed helped to capture public interest and informed the design of the council's 10-year plan which followed.

Through clear messaging, vibrant visuals, and playful design elements, we created a document that invited community feedback and engaged the diverse Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai Lower Hutt community. The consultation document focused on inclusivity and clarity, effectively communicating the Council’s plans to guide the Long Term Plan for the next ten years. Supporting campaign materials were created to share and invite participation in the consultation process. Including lively bright social media imagery and animation to inform people on how they could get involved and fill in the feedback form. The animation was also screened at community hubs and head office waiting areas.

Designed for both print and digital platforms, the document achieved unprecedented engagement, with contributions from tamariki and rangatahi. Building on this success, we undertook the next design challenge, the comprehensive 300+ page 10 Year Plan, which repurposed existing visual elements to guide readers through the Council’s long-term vision. This collaborative effort resulted in clear, engaging materials that effectively communicated the HCC’s plans and encouraged ongoing community involvement.

Clarity is always our key design consideration. We ensured important information stood out to the readers using double page spreads and infographics. There was a strong focus on information design, paired with an innovative approach in the presentation of information and data, to ensure it was compelling and engaging for their broad audience.

The theme this year was “Help us take the next steps”, chosen to reflect progress and invite community involvement. The Council knew that community representation would play an important part in prompting engagement, so our illustrations throughout the documents needed to be tailored to reflect community diversity. Clear messaging had to be used to ensure information was easily understandable, and they wanted a playful approach to the design to connect with a broader audience without appearing overly formal. All working together so there was a strong call to action for the public to respond and be involved.
