We created a new website for the beloved waterfront landmark: the Wellington Writers Walk. The Walk consists of 23 plaques which honour and celebrate the lives and works of well-known New Zealand writers. It invites you on a self-led journey through the waterfronts pedestrian precinct using the website as your guide. The plaques’ bold design and integrated placement (one is literally submerged in harbour) has made them an iconic staple of the waterfront, with each plaque reading as a love letter to Wellington and its inhabitants.
Our aim was to design a new website for the Wellington Writers Walk that captures the vibrant and memorable nature of the Writers’ plaques. So we applied a bright colour palette that plays off the greys of the concrete and steel plaques and positions the Walk as a modern and unmissable arts experience.
We went back to basics, completely rethinking the user experience and information flow around the site. The mobile-first interface imagines the primary user walking around the waterfront on the lookout for nearby sculptures. While part of the Walk’s charm is the serendipity of stumbling across a new plaque, the interactive map helps you discover other plaques nearby and enables you to further explore the author’s writing and background. As Wellingtonians, we’re proud to have been able to help others be inspired by our city and its people through the discovery and play that the walk and the supporting website provides.
